Lingual Braces

Hidden (Lingual) Braces in Brooklyn NY

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines lingual as “lying near or next to the tongue.” They further explain that in dentistry, this refers to the “surface of tooth next to the tongue.” Therefore, lingual braces are affixed to the back of the teeth, nearest the tongue.

How Lingual Braces Work

Like their traditional counterparts, lingual braces work by applying gentle pressure, or tension, to shift teeth into proper positioning. Unlike traditional braces, lingual braces are affixed to the back of teeth. While this is great for aesthetics and makes them nearly invisible, there are other factors to consider.

The process begins with an impression of your teeth which is used to create custom brackets. The doctor will affix the brackets to the back of your teeth. The creation of the custom bracket and installation of lingual braces takes longer than traditional braces. The treatment duration can be 18 to 36 months, but depends on the severity of misalignment.

Due to the positioning on the back of teeth, this type of braces are more difficult to install and adjust. This will increase appointment durations. Unfortunately, it also increases the cost. While the total cost averages out to around the same as Invisalign treatment for extensive malocclusions, it is more costly than traditional braces.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Although not everyone is a good candidate for lingual braces, this may be an option for your treatment. It helps to explore the advantages and disadvantages during the decision-making process. The brackets and wires are not easily visible due to their positioning on the back of teeth. This makes lingual braces a preference for patients desiring a low-profile method of tooth straightening.

Advantages:

  • Near invisible method of treatment
  • Effectively correct most malocclusions
  • Can be custom-fit to increase comfort

Disadvantages:

  • Cost is higher than traditional braces or other treatments
  • May cause a temporary lisp when speaking
  • Treatment duration may be longer than other treatment methods
  • May cause additional discomfort initially

Although lingual braces can be a very effective treatment, we should note that some conditions may not be treatable with them. For instance, a patient with an extreme overbite may have problems with the brackets detaching more frequently. If you are curious about your suitability for this treatment method, please inquire during your initial consultation.
